Pacific Rim Review
Over the last decade we've had lots of films about robots and/or brutally aliens assaulting each other: Real Steel, Alien vs. Predator, Transformers and Battleship.
Pacific Rim is very similar to the likes of these with the CGI and fighting aspect, but, it performs very differently to what you would expect. Here's the review:

Now, we are presented with 'Pacific Rim', a CGI epic about aliens that come from beneath the sea (Kaiju). The humans build giant robots (Jaegers) to combat the threat. But, as the attacks become more common and the Kaiju become stronger, the Jaeger program is shut down to make way for the 'Wall of Life' program, which is to build walls to keep the Kaiju out. This is an incredible premise to the film, and the way 'Del Toro' presents this apocalyptic, war-torn earth is absolutely fantastic...
Pacific Rim ticks all the boxes. It's got incredible graphics, badass sound effects, a beautifully conducted score and even includes an emotional aspect in the film. Those film fans looking for an epic with tons of fight scenes may not be so pleased though as there are like two action scenes, but most of them are pretty repetitive, sadly. |
The universe of Pacific Rim is awesome.
It is set a few years in the future though (2018-20), but for some reason, even these massive robots are believable! Also, each Kaiju is very different. Some are like sharks (very streamlined), some are like crabs (have these awesome claws) and one of them can even fly! (*right) Plus, each Jaeger has different stuff. The main one has a massive cannon in it's hand, another has three arms and the Russian one, I call 'The Bin', because, well, it looks like a bin... Anyway, as I said, the universe is awesome and if there is ever a sequel I would hope that the director, Guillermo Del Toro, digs deeper into the mythos of the Kaiju and expands on the concepts of the 'Neural Handshake' and the ability to Drift with a Kaiju, both of which you'll have to find more about in the film... |
This is not just a CGI based film with no story, like Battleship, it has an emotional side to it and has a much more interesting mythos, which battleship also lacks...
