Monsters University Review
Now, the original Monsters, Inc. is one of my favourite family films of all time, it's got everything: humour, character development, an emotional backplot, evil undertones and even a musical post-credits scene. But, 12 years later, a prequel has been released, regaling us with the story of Mike, James and Randall's college days: Monsters University.
Mike Wazowski always wanted to be a scarer. And the film mainly begins with Michael "Mike" Wazowski entering college, there he meets Randall Boggs, his roommate and James "Sully" Sullivan, a co-major of Scare School. After being kicked out of it by the Dean, Mike and Sully join Oozma Kappa (fraternity) in the 'Scare Games', to determine the scariest monster in the school. Also, their uni. positions are at risk due to a bet that Mike made with the Dean shortly after being evicted from Scare School.
Alright, it is the 'classic' school setting: where there's a rivalry between different groups and cliques, but here, it works perfectly. Plus, the animation is awesome, a massive jump in detail since Monsters Inc. |
The music is also fun and jazzy like in the previous film, and some really good voice acting makes this film even better!
Sadly, in every great film there's always one flaw. In this, it's continuity. In Monsters Inc. the events of this film seem forgotten. e.g. Mike makes a point about an event that happened to Sully and him in 4th grade. But they meet in university. What?! And that's another point. A university theme is only going to appeal to those in university. 6 year-olds (the target audience) don't know what a fraternity is! And a modern university environment is going to seem alien to both children and adults. Finally, |
This is Disney's first prequel and they've done a decent job, the only problem is continuity. Also, there wasn't any funny *that's going to make you laugh forever* moments that you see in most Disney/Dreamworks films. Monsters University gets a monstrous...
